Assininity in Action

Assinninity in Action

Hello, everyone.

This morning (12/15/12) Crooks & Liars ran a video of Mike Huckabee blithering away about the school shooting in Connecticut. Almost at the start of the clip, he said that it was awful that the shooting was getting so much attention. Well, DUH!! What in the hell do you think is going to happen if some cowardly moron goes into an elementary school and starts shooting up innocent little children? Attention, my foot! People are naturally going to want to know what happened, and why. If that is inconvenient for Huckabee, then tough crap!

The C&L video runs for 3 minutes and 45 seconds, and not once — NOT ONCE!! — in that time does Huckabee say even one word to the families of the dead and wounded. NOT ONE WORD of encouragement for those people who lost children. NOT ONE WORD of comfort for them. Since he is an Evangelical, somehow that’s not surprising.

But here are some words that he DID say:

HUCKABEE: Ultimately, you can take away every gun in America and somebody will use a bomb. When somebody has an intent to do incredible damage, they’re going to find a way to do it… People will want to pass new laws, but unless you change people’s hearts, they’re our transition to the pastor side. This is a heart issue, it’s not something, laws don’t change this kind of thing.

CAVUTO: You know, invariably, people ask after tragedies like this, “How could God let this happen?”

HUCKABEE: Well, you know, it’s an interesting thing. We ask why there is violence in our schools but we have systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage? Because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability — that we’re not just going to have be accountable to the police if they catch us, but one day we stand before, you know, a holy God in judgment. If we don’t believe that, then we don’t fear that. And so I sometimes, when people say, why did God let it happen. You know, God wasn’t armed. He didn’t go to the school. But God will be there in the form of a lot people with hugs and with therapy and a whole lot of ways in which I think he will be involved in the aftermath. Maybe we ought to let him in on the front end and we wouldn’t have to call him to show up when it’s all said and done at the back end.

This cries out for a parsing, and I am more than happy to oblige.

First, how in the hell does Huckabee know that people will turn to bombs if they are deprived of their almighty precious guns? That is sheer stupidity!

Second, we do not need to pass new laws; we just need to change hearts. I know where he gets this pile of shit. It is the old idea that “Jesus” can change hearts. I’ve heard that moronic bilge all my life. I can say without any equivacation that the meanest, nastiest people I have had the displeasure of knowing in the course of my life have been Evangelical Christians. If “Jesus” really changed their hearts, then they must have been really mean, worthless, miserable bastards before they met him.

Third, schools have become hotbeds of carnage because we have taken “God” out of them. But I thought that it was a HEART issue. That’s what he just said. NOW he says it’s because we have taken “God” out of the schools. Let’s consider that assininity for a few moments.

In 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb from the Enola Gay onto the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Tens of thousands of human beings were vaporized or injured in other ways. Was God taken out of the War Department?

Earlier this week, there was another mass shooting in a shopping mall out in Oregon. Was God taken out of the shopping malls in this country?

A while back, there was a shooting in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Was God taken out of all of this nation’s movie theaters?

Nor too long ago, there was still another mass shooting at a Muslim mosque in Wisconsin. Was God taken out of that mosque? The Muslims would be quick to set you straight if you believed that.

And virtually every day, there is a shooting in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles, etc. Has God been taken out of the streets of our country?

I mean, let’s use our brains, people!!

Fourth, he said this: “You know, God wasn’t armed. He didn’t go to the school.” But I thought that “God” was omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. Why wasn’t he in that school if he was those things? It all comes back to the innate need of intelligent human beings to know the answer to the question “why?” I have asked that question all of my life, and when I was in Evangelicalism, I got into serious trouble for asking it. I believe that this is part of the procedure that intelligent people use to sort things out. There is that innate idea in our minds that life has to make sense somehow, and when something violates that idea, then we sense the need to try to justify that something. Whether or not God was armed has absolutely no relevance in this situation. What IS relevant is that we seek the answer to the question “Why did God let this thing happen?” until we are satisfied in our minds that we have found a satisfactory answer.

Need more evidence of the Republican / Evangelical assininity? Last June, Michelle Malkin — star of the Republican Party and sweetheart of the Evangelicals said this. Thanks to Daily Kos for the quote:

“They really outdid themselves. In Wisconsin and across the nation, public school employee unions spared no kiddie human shields in their battle against GOP Gov. Scott Walker’s budget and pension reforms. Students were the first and last casualties of the ruthless Big Labor war against fiscal discipline.

“To kick off the yearlong protest festivities, the Wisconsin Education Association Council led a massive “sickout” of educators and other government school personnel … When they weren’t ditching their students, radical teachers steeped in the social justice ethos of National Education Association-approved community organizer Saul Alinsky were shamelessly using other people’s children as their own political junior lobbyists and pawns.”

Here is a little more assininity, this time from Crooks & Liars on 12/15/12:

“Particularly because the other half of the conversation — the gun-rights absolutists who increasingly retreat into paranoid conspiracy theories to justify their worldviews, as well as an insurrectionist interpretation of the Second Amendment asserting that the real purpose of gun ownership is to enable the overthrow of a tyrannical government — is just plain ol’ bug-eyed crazy. Not to mention psychopathically insensate, exemplified by the Brian Fischers and Mike Huckabees out there blaming liberals for the murders.

“How exactly are we supposed to conduct a conversation with people who cling insistently to irrational nonsense?”

As one of my students at the Fundie high school used to say: Excuse me while I go vomit.

By no means will this be the last mass shooting. And unfortunately, this will not be the last school shooting. There will be more — until the Evangelicals FINALLY decide that ALL human life — not just that “life” in the womb — is sacred. But based on my time in the Evangelical world, I truly do not believe that they have the intellect to grasp that fact. Or else, they give such adoration and worship to their almighty guns that they do NOT WANT to grasp that fact. And, by the way, shouldn’t that adoration and worship belong to God and God alone?

What needs to happen to prevent all the gun carnage is for present gun laws to be strengthened — and ENFORCED!! — and for tougher ones to be enacted. And we thinking people need to be aware that the Republicans and Evangelicals will fight us every inch of the way. But this senseless killing simply cannot go on. I am totally against totalitarianism, but I am smart enough to realize that there are some situations where totalitarianism is the only reasonable answer. And all of this conservative / Evangelical bullshit about guns is one of those situations.

Or maybe we should abandon the “Prince of Peace” and find ourselves a God who takes the sanctity of life — ALL LIFE — seriously.

Happy Holidays, under the circumstances. And Seasons Greetings, again under the circumstances.
